@ Tamsyn following the Universalist ...Thanks Alex!

@ Tamsyn following the Universalist line Mugabe will be in heaven - but he will be reformed and purified first. Following the opposite view, it's impossible to say with certainty where anyone would end up. My reasoning is this - tell me if I'm wrong.

The centrality of salvation by grace through faith in Protestant theology suggests that we are saved by grace, not by works. To follow this to its logical conclusion, a man like Mugabe would indeed go to heaven provided he appeals to Christ for mercy, no mater how great his sins. His life might suggest that his faith is not genuine but we can't know that.

Either way I hope he's thoroughly changed before he gets there as I wouldn't want to hang around with him as he is!Jonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11272544252649766985noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-146183364287787287.post-70656632857234084382011-05-02T20:53:26.421+10:002011-05-02T20:53:26.421+10:00Interesting- just on one point, so do you think th...Interesting- just on one point, so do you think that Mugabe is likely to go to heaven because he is an outwardly practicing Christian? Don't you think that his actions, which are so contradictory to the gospel, show that it is unlikely that he actually believes and follows it, even if he pays it lip service?Tamsyn Eastgatenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-146183364287787287.post-86334861929235328902011-05-02T20:35:12.010+10:002011-05-02T20:35:12.010+10:00Excellent post Jon! This anti-Universalist "argument" comes up all the time, and I really find it incomprehensible (no offense to those hold the position) that people can think that our decisions don't matter if there isn't ECT.

I think God is patient, wise and loving enough to be able to eventually bring us to a position that lets us freely choose Him. Exactly how He does that is a mystery but I'm confident He would only have created us if He knew how to reconcile all of us when we inevitably went astray.

As you mentioned C.S. Lewis, my friend posted this How close did Lewis get to universalism? This close! which I think you'll enjoy :)Alex Smithhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03012828252900281919noreply@blogger.com
